چکیده

This paper presents a method for voice percussion recognition and its application to drum pattern retrieval. Recognition of voice percussion (verbalized expression of drum sound by voice) requires an approach that is different from existing methods. Individual differences in both vocal characteristics and the kinds of verbal expressions used add further complication to the task. The approach taken in this study uses onomatopoeia as internal representation of drum sounds, and combines the recognition of voice percussion with the retrieval of intended drum patterns. This scheme is intended to deal with the two types of individual differences mentioned above. In a recognition experiment with 200 utterances of voice percussion, our method achieved a recognition rate of 91.0% for the highesttuned setting. keywords: voice percussion recognition, drum pattern retrieval, onomatopoeia representation

Voice Drummer: A Music Notation Interface of Drum Sounds Using Voice Percussion Input

Voice Drummer is a percussion instrument notation interface using spoken percussion patterns as input. Its internal framework is based on the authors’ previous study on voice percussion recognition. Voice Drummer can be used in various applications such as composition, arrangement, and score editing. The system has the capability of adapting to individual users during the practice sessions, ena...

Query-by-Beat-Boxing: Music Retrieval For The DJ

BeatBoxing is a type of vocal percussion, where musicians use their lips, cheeks, and throat to create different beats. It is commonly used by hiphop and rap artists. In this paper, we explore the use of BeatBoxing as a query mechanism for music information retrieval and more speci£cally the retrieval of drum loops. A classi£cation system that automatically identi£es the individual beat boxing ...

From Low-Level to Song-Level Percussion Descriptors of Polyphonic Music

We address here the automatic description of percussive events in real-world polyphonic music. By taking a pattern recognition approach we evaluate more than 2,450 objectlevel features. Three binary instrument-wise support vector machines (SVM) are built from a training set of more that 100 songs and 10 genres. Then, we use these binary models to build a drum transcription system achieving comp...

The Evolving Drum Machine

The expectation of the listener from house and techno music seems to be that percussion sounds will maintain the same timbre for the duration of a piece of music. For the composers of such musics the synthesizing of drum sounds of a quality equal to those available from commercial drum machines or samples is difficult and seems unnecessary. A system is presented here which provides a unique met...

Imitation Framework for Percussion

We present a framework for imitation of percussion performances with parameter-based learning for accurate reproduction. We constructed a robotic setup involving pull-solenoids attached to drum sticks which communicate with a computer through a microcontroller. The imitation framework allows for parameter adaptation to different mechanical constructions by learning the capabilities of the overa...
